Week two recaps!

🏀Spring Asian Open D1 & Asian D2 Recaps
Division 1
Bombtans (84) v. Knights (69)
The Division 1 season kicks off with the debut of two new teams! The collaboration of last seasons Bomb Squad and Spartans, forming the "Bombtans" (I mean what else would they be called?) Lol! Taking on the Bombtans on this day would be the new and improved Knights (a combo of the Eagles and Boogie).
The Knights started the game of trying to find the right combination of players to defeat the Bombtans. The coach, Kel, relied heavily on Jovelle! He led all scorers with 23pts (8-14 fgs), while TK added 12pts for the Knights. The score, however, did not go to their advantage as they were down, 40-32 at the half.
Meanwhile, the Bombtans gelled together rather quickly. With the 1-2 punch of Mo and Wai. Each player scored 20pts to lead the squad. Big Mo added 14rebs to go along with his points for a gargantuan double-double! This team was on point from the jump and laid out a warning for the rest of the league to watch out! They went on to win the game, 84-69!

Goon Squad (57) v. GS Threat Matrix (50)
The next matchup was between two newly formed teams as the Goon Squad took on GS Threat Matrix!
I asked captain Chris Knight what the meaning behind GS Threat Matrix was and he told me that the GS stood for Golden State and the SC Threat Matrix, their D2 team, stood for Santa Cruz! Made more sense to me. The Matrix went into this battle w/o their leading scorer from last season but Chris (12pts) and Tyler (11pts) try to carry the load. Unfortunately for the Matrix their offense was a miss in the first half digging themselves into a hole, 28-13, after the first half of play.
The Goon Squad was lad into the game by their team captain, Christian Sami. He played for another team last season but was so impressed by TDS that he decided to form a team mostly friends from high school! Two of those friends were Justin Tuason, who went for a double-double (18p 10r) and Allan Santos who also scored a game high 18pts!
They were outscored in the second half by 10pts but managed to hold onto the lead, 57-50!

Squadron (65) v. SFC (49)
The last game of the day was the Squadron taking on a team that is new to TripleDoubleSports, SFC!
SFC is new to TDS this season but they have heard good things about the league and have been wanting to join a TripleDoubleSports league for a while now! Their first test would be Squadron! They came out of the gates shot for shot. At the end of the first quarter the score was all knotted up at 14 apiece! SFC hit a roadblock and couldn't find the hoop in the second quarter only scoring 6pts! They trailed at the half, 33-20!
A seasoned team like the Squadron took full advantage of SFC's shooting woes! Lengthening their lead in the third to 20pts! Behind efforts from Dorian Sun (scored a game high 22pts) and Jordan (17pts) the Squadron held on in the fourth and final quarter to win the game handily, 65-49!

Division 2
SF Braves (63) v. Prodigies (78)
The second week for D2 starts off with the SF Braves and a long time TripleDoubleSports team, the Prodigies who have taken a couple of leagues off but are now back looking for their rightful place atop the standings!
The SF Braves led into battle behind their leader, Tone Arce, tried to build off their first weeks win with another great performance. MJ (#33) led the Braves in scoring with 16pts and Big Nelson showed off his feathery touch by connecting on 3-3pt shots in the second quarter alone! The Braves shot 11-33 fgs (33%) in the first half but managed to stay in the game only trailing by 10pts, 39-29!
The Prodigies are back after a little lay off! They are older but they still play well as a team! Q. Wu led the way for the Prodigies with 23pts & 4asts while Barry Lee added 15pts. Their lead was down to 4pts at 52-48 beginning the fourth. They managed to hold on for the win by shooting 7-11 fgs (64%) in the final quarter! The final score, 78-63!

SC Threat Matrix (45) v. Putties (39)
The Putties have returned for another go at it and this season they are facing a new team, the SC Threat Matrix!
JMac has come back to TripleDoubleSports (eyebrow raise)! After missing the first week, the captain has resurfaced to lead the Putties into battle! Jason Lee had a great game! Notching a double-double (16p 10r)! "You live by the 3...you die by the 3!" They shot it a measly 3-12 (25%) in the first half but were only down by a single point at the half, 19-18!
The SC Threat Matrix (SC stands for Santa Cruz) showed a lot of heart! The Matrix lengthened their lead in the third quarter to 6pts, by outscoring the Putties 14-9! Led by Nick Knight scoring 8 of his game high 18pts in the period! It was a hard fought fourth and final quarter but the Matrix were able to hold on to the lead and win, 45-39!

Rock Center (53) v. Saints (49)
Two newly formed teams are next up as Rock Center (w/ Cris Pineda at the helm) took on Mike Lim's Saints squad!
The Saints are a new team formed by Mike Lim! The Saints were trying to climb out of a hole that they built by losing the first quarter, 23-11! They lost the first and third quarters by a combined score of, 45-27, but they won the second and fourth quarters, 22-8! Behind the scoring of Lamar (13pts) and Mike (12pts) the Saints managed to keep the game close! They were trailing at the half, 27-20!
Rock Center a staple of our Open League tried their hand at the Asian League this season! Their first game at this level was inconsistent, to say the least. They allowed the Saints chance after chance by missing, of all things, FREE THROWS! As a team, they shot a miserable 4-12 fts (33%)! It was Jay to the rescue! He shot the ball well (10-12 fgs 83%) scoring a game high, 26pts and Darius had 4asts to go along with his 15pts! The game was a lot closer than the stats show! Despite the woes at the free throw line, Rock Center went onto win, 53-49!

Bulls (73) v. Dawgs (70)
The next matchup belongs to the Bulls and former champions, the Dawgs!
The Dawgs came out of the gates strong! They showed the meaning of "team"! They had 5 different players score a field goal in the first quarter! The Dawgs had the ball moving around like the Warriors! Bryan Petroni scored a double-double with 15pts & 10rebs and Mark came through with a team high 16pts. Although they started the game strong, they ended up trailing at the half, 34-32!
For the Bulls, they started the game slowly. With only Antonio (13pts) scoring in the quarter. The Bulls extended their lead in the third period by outscoring the Dawgs, 23-13!  Behind the play of Wai (11-13 fgs), the Bulls opened up the game!
The Dawgs made a run in the fourth quarter but ran out of time! The Bulls won by the final score of, 73-70!

Saints (73) v. Swishers (75)
Division 2 concluded the day with a good one! The Saints and the Swishers round out the day for TripleDoubleSports in a barn burner!
The Saints, just coming off of a close game, had yet another one in their battle versus last season's champs! The Saints jumped out ahead to an early lead, 18-12, after the first quarter! Jon scored 10 of his game high 29pts in the first half and Dave came through with a big double-double, 18pts & 14rebs! The score was knotted up at 33 apiece at the half!
The Swishers matched every basket with a basket! The champs showed their championship pride as they never gave into the barrage of points scored by the Saints! Team captain, Steven Tom, scored a season high 22pts and Dorian came up with 16pts to play as the dynamic duo! They were down by a point, 54-53, going into the fourth and final quarter! Big 3's by Dorian and Andy Put the game out of reach as the Swishers came back to win, 75-73, in a tight contest!
